Triguboff Files Plans for Surfers Paradise Skyscrapers

Meriton has submitted proposals for a dual-tower building in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, just as its neighbouring skyscraper, Ocean, is nearing completion.

At 152 The Esplanade, a 637-apartment construction is planned for a 4400-square-meter plot.

The beachfront of Surfers Paradise lies on the east side of the site, while Main Beach Parade is on the west.

Meriton, owned by Harry Triguboff, has applied to the Gold Coast City Council to construct a 70-story tower with 382 apartments and a 50-story tower with 255 units over a low-level podium.

Tower 1 will have 45 one-bedroom apartments, 218 two-bedroom apartments, 93 three-bedroom apartments, and 26 four-bedroom apartments.

Tower 2 will have 45 one-bedroom apartments, 99 two-bedroom apartments, 88 three-bedroom apartments, and 23 four-bedroom apartments.

The development, designed by DBI Architecture, would replace four existing freehold allotments that were formerly occupied by two mid-rise towers, Beach Lodge and Bahia Beachfront Apartments, as well as a vacant block and two-story detached residence.

On the third level of the building's podium, Meriton aims to offer "extensive communal recreation and lifestyle facilities," including resort pools, spas, lounge decks, yoga grounds, barbecues, and shared lounge terraces.

In the north-eastern corner of the site, Tower One will have a 20-meter lap pool, a residents' gym with panoramic views on level 42, as well as a steam room, games area, and terrace.

Three penthouse apartments will be available on Level 70, with two four-bedroom apartments and one three-bedroom unit. There will be two private balconies in each apartment.

A "floating roof cap" will be added to the tower, providing residents with an outdoor dining deck and open pergola.

Two four-bedroom penthouses will be located in Tower 2, which is located in the north-western corner of the site, with internal staircases leading to private roof terraces.

Both towers will be erected above nine basement levels, with 926 parking spots, and 2000 square metres of retail space for food and beverage outlets on the ground floor level, which will open into landscaped outdoor dining terraces and an open landscaped pedestrian plaza.

Meriton aims to construct the project in two stages, with the basement levels and lower tower being built first, pending clearances.

Triguboff has made no secret of his wish to focus considerably more of Meriton's attention on the Sunshine State after being forced to shut down many construction projects across Sydney during the pandemic.

Triguboff, who is worth an estimated $16 billion, intends to buy further land on the Gold Coast and, to a lesser extent, in Brisbane, in order to construct between 2000 and 3000 additional flats.
